(Washington, DC) – On Friday, July 7, at 12 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will celebrate DC Public Schools’ Extended-Year at Garfield Elementary School. Students enrolled in extended-year schools receive an additional month of instruction by increasing the academic school year from 180 days to 200 days.
Last year, following a pilot program, Mayor Bowser expanded the number of DC Public Schools (DCPS) to participate in extended-year during the 2016-2017 school year, including Garfield Elementary. Extended-year schools provide students with the opportunity to further explore and excel in a wide range of areas including art, music, physical education, and foreign languages. Currently, there are more than 4,000 students enrolled in 11 extended-year schools.
